How to: Plot Building

Plot
Plot

Building a compelling plot is essential for any engaging story. Here are 10 steps to help you create a winning plot:

  1. Study Effective Examples:

    • Read books, watch movies, or analyze other works of fiction to understand how successful plots are developed. Pay attention to pacing, tension, and character arcs.
  2. Use a Plotting Process:

    • Start with a basic idea or concept for your story. Then, outline the major events that will occur. Consider using methods like the three-act structure or the hero’s journey.
  3. Create a Timeline:

    • Map out the key plot events in chronological order. This timeline will serve as a guide for your writing process.
  4. Character Development:

    • Characters drive the plot. Make sure your characters evolve throughout the story. Show their growth, struggles, and internal conflicts.
  5. Change the ‘5 W’s’:

    • The ‘5 W’s’—Who, What, When, Where, and Why—should evolve as the plot unfolds. Characters’ motivations, goals, and circumstances should shift, creating tension and intrigue.
  6. Outline Scenes:

    • Break down your plot into individual scenes. Each scene should serve a purpose, whether it’s revealing information, advancing the plot, or developing characters.

Remember, a well-crafted plot keeps readers hooked and invested in your story. Happy writing!

Ever heard the term “herding cats?” or been to a Writer’s Workshop? At TSP, we find that plunking them into a corral and closing the gate is far more fun. (If participants agree, I’ll post some of the vids here!)
If you’re green and talented, we are happy to work with you. If you’re a pro, you already know that writers never stop learning. Best yet, at TSP much of this is gratis.

**TSP has great editors for your work. We’re all aware of what goes into a great piece of writing, be it a mystery novel or a tech manual. It’s our intention to have your work published at its very best.

Which writers are accepted at TSP?

We welcome all races, religions, the disabled, and aliens (don’t look too closely at Cat, for instance.) If you are green and have the Touch (a lot of talent), we are happy to help train you. That’s one reason Trish has excellent editors who believe in helping writers. If you’re a pro and haven’t been able to break in, we’re here for you as well. We’re old-fashioned in that we believe in paying writers, not the other way around. We are =NOT= a vanity press.
